Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L) at Sommerville
At Sommerville Special School, we have developed our Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L) framework to underpin our vision Together, learning to live our best lives. Through our PB4L we create a safe, supportive, and respectful environment so akonga learn positive behaviours, just like any other subject, through clear expectations, encouragement, and practice.
By focusing on what’s going well and reinforcing positive choices, we empower our akonga to succeed socially, emotionally, and academically.
Our school values are an important part of PB4L because they guide how we treat each other and help us feel safe, included, and ready to learn. They set a shared expectation for everyone – akonga, staff, and whānau – so we can grow together in a positive and supportive community.
Our Values at Sommerville Special School
At Sommerville School, our values guide everything we do, shaping a supportive and inspiring environment for our akonga, staff, and whānau.
Kia Māia/Courageous
Kia māia means trying new things, being brave, and believing in ourselves. We support our akonga to be strong, to love learning, and to embrace challenges with confidence. We celebrate persistence – never giving up, asking for help when needed, and taking steps forward even when things feel difficult. At Sommerville, courage is about discovering our potential and growing every day.
Kia Hono/Connected
Kia hono means building relationships, feeling a sense of belonging, and knowing that we matter. We create spaces where akonga, families, and staff feel valued and respected. We support our akonga to make good choices, develop friendships, and be a part of their community. At Sommerville, everyone has a place, and together, we lift each other up.
Through Kia Māia and Kia Hono values, we create a school where every individual is supported to thrive, learn, and shine.
